Spring 2026 Fieldwork in the Kızılırmak Delta Conservation Area

With the onset of the spring season, a specialized research team has initiated an extensive field campaign within the Kızılırmak Delta Protected Area. The mission marks the start of the 2026 aquatic biodiversity monitoring cycle, a critical component in the management of one of the most ecologically significant wetland systems in the Black Sea Basin.

Precision Fieldwork in a Vital Ecosystem

Operations began at dawn today as researchers deployed across the delta’s complex network of lagoons and marshes. The timing of the survey is strategic: the transition into spring triggers vital life-cycle events for numerous aquatic species, including spawning migrations and the emergence of larval populations.

The primary objectives of this monitoring phase include:

  • Biological Inventorying: Utilizing invasive and non-invasive sampling techniques to document the distribution of endemic and migratory aquatic fauna.

  • Physicochemical Analysis: Systematic monitoring of water quality parameters, including dissolved oxygen levels and nutrient concentrations, to assess the impact of seasonal runoff.

  • Habitat Integrity Mapping: Evaluating the health of the delta’s communities.

A Site of International Significance

The Kızılırmak Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List site and a designated Ramsar Wetland, remains a cornerstone of Türkiye’s environmental heritage. The project team provides the empirical data necessary to navigate the challenges of climate change and habitat preservation by maintaining a consistent presence in the field.
