BlackNETs Project: Exorcising the Black Sea from 'Silent Killers' Awareness Activities Have Begun!
As part of the BlackNETs Project, awareness-raising events are being organized to highlight the damage caused by ghost nets and Abandoned, Lost, or Otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG) to the marine ecosystem and marine life. These activities aim to extend the project's message to a wider audience, emphasizing the importance of reducing ghost nets.
On December 17, 2024, a seminar organized by the Trabzon Association for the Protection of Natural and Historical Values (DOĞA-TARİH) brought together 30 participants, including academics, administrators, public officials, engineers, architects, educators, and other experts, for knowledge-sharing and discussions on solutions.
On December 20, 2024, an awareness and information session was held at 88th Year Republic Anatolian High School, where 142 students learned about ghost nets, destructive fishing practices, and the harmful effects of lost fishing gear on marine biodiversity through photographs, videos, and informational materials.
The seminar presentations were delivered with contributions from Prof. Dr. Fatma Telli Karakoç, Prof. Dr. Coşkun Erüz, Prof. Dr. Hacer Sağlam, Dr. Neira Purwanty Ismail, and MSc student Melike Tüysüz.
As part of the awareness campaign, participants were informed about the severe impact of ghost nets on marine life, and solutions for reducing ghost nets were discussed. With active engagement, questions, and contributions from participants, these activities play a crucial role in raising awareness about marine conservation, fostering a better understanding of the marine ecosystem, and promoting sustainability among society and young generations.
