9th International Entomopathogens and Microbial Control Congress Held at Our University
The 9th International Entomopathogens and Microbial Control Congress, hosted by our university, took place from October 28 to 31, 2024, at the Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Cultural and Congress Center.
This year's congress, attended by many experts from Türkiye and around the world, presented scientific studies on the pathogens of harmful organisms in agriculture, forestry, and urban areas. The slogan for this year's congress was “Sustainable and Livable Environment.”
In his opening speech at the congress, our Rector, Prof. Dr. Hamdullah ÇUVALCI, stated, “The importance of biological approaches in combating harmful organisms for a sustainable and livable environment is increasing every day, and these approaches bring important opportunities for solving many problems... In Türkiye, the brown marmorated stink bug was first identified in 2017 in Istanbul and then in Artvin the same year. The primary invasion area of the brown marmorated stink bug is the Black Sea Region, where many fruits and vegetables, such as hazelnuts, corn, tea, kiwis, dates, chestnuts, mulberries, medlar, and pears, are produced. Türkiye is the world's largest producer and exporter of hazelnuts, and the recent emergence and continued spread of the brown marmorated stink bug in Türkiye pose a potential threat to hazelnut production and other products in the country. The congress will address new techniques and scientific developments for effective combat against the brown marmorated stink bug, which will greatly contribute to the production process of the local community and the economy of our country.”
In recent years, the process of combating harmful organisms began with fundamental studies such as the detection, isolation, and identification of agents. Many research projects have expanded to include genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, functional genomic, DNA-based identification techniques, gene expression analyses, and recombination studies, leading to product development, laboratory, and field trials. The congress provided a detailed examination of these approaches.
